Spotlight on energy projects

EECA follows and shares the progress of clean and clever energy projects around New Zealand, particularly if we have contributed co-funding to the project.

A steam-powered solution for sustainable hygiene products

Essity's Kawerau paper mill has introduced a tissue machine that uses 100% geothermal steam for drying.

The transition from fossil gas to geothermal steam will reduce the plant's emissions by 66% in the production of 55,000 tonnes of tissue and paper towel rolls each year.

The Kawerau site is the only manufacturer of toilet tissue, paper towel, and kitchen towel in New Zealand. It produces Tork-branded paper products for schools, hospitals, hotels, and workplaces, as well as consumer brands such as Sorbent, Purex, and Handee.

The project involves temporarily shutting down a paper machine to install a new drum dryer that runs on geothermal steam. The refit also boosts the local economy, preserving jobs and supporting businesses in the Kawerau District.

The project is backed by a $20 million investment from Essity, with co-funding support from EECA.
