Open now: The Government is seeking interest from New Zealand businesses in very high temperature heat pump projects.

EECA is supporting the introduction of very high temperature heat pumps over 100°C in New Zealand to accelerate the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate processes.

Currently there are limited electrification options for industrial processes that require heat over 100 °C. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in projects showcasing New Zealand’s first very high temperature heat pump technology.

A staged process will be required for successful project delivery, so the earlier businesses can engage with suitable suppliers the better equipped they will be to provide suitable project applications. This will also help identify what level of support may be required for New Zealand businesses to invest in this technology.

Successful demonstration of this technology will enable EECA to deliver public value to New Zealanders by showcasing this opportunity and accelerating our emissions reduction.

What we are looking for

  • EECA is looking for projects that demonstrate the use case for very high temperature heat pump technology in New Zealand process heat applications.
  • Respondents will need to show they have researched potential technology suppliers and identified a supplier with the capacity and capability to meet their operational needs.
  • The applicant will also need to estimate the site’s current stationary energy related emissions and carbon abatement expected by successful application of heat pump technology.  Respondents need to be willing to share the outcomes of the project with other New Zealand businesses relevant to the technology application.
  • Alongside reducing emissions, EECA is interested in projects that may also deliver broader outcomes such as employment opportunities, upskilling and workforce development.

Supplier briefing webinar

We held a webinar on November 7 to provide further information on the RFP. We talked about the criteria, the application process and answered questions from attendees. Please see the webinar recording, slides, a link to the IEA high-temperature heat pumps, task 1 Technologies (Annex 58) referred to during the briefing and Q&As below.

Submissions

New Zealand based businesses who currently use fossil fuels to produce heating greater than 100°C are invited to make submissions through the Government Electronic Tendering Service (GETS).

The RFP closes for submissions on Thursday 12 December.
