The Regional Heat Demand Database is an interactive tool designed for government, business and academics wanting to understand how and where  fossil fuels are used by large process heat using sites. It is a key dataset for other EECA products, such as the Regional Energy Transition Accelerator(external link).

The data is aggregated to the regional level, and can be filtered by region, sector, and fuel type. A variety of key metrics can then be viewed as maps, charts, or downloaded as CSV files.

Last updated: August 2024

Data was collected for the South Island across 2021 and 2022, and for the North Island across 2022 and 2023. The data has been validated against, and supplemented with, data collected through EECA’s Regional Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) programme of work, to ensure the dataset is of the highest quality currently achievable.

Longer term it is planned that the Regional Heat Demand Database will be maintained and updated with the most current information available on the process heat data picture, and this will include clean fuel usage for process heat as well.

Detailed raw data can be made available to New Zealand government agencies for the purposes of work relating to New Zealand's decarbonisation. For more information contact EECAenquiries@eeca.govt.nz with the subject line "Regional Heat Demand Database".
