Your steps to compliance
-
1
Check
Regulated products must meet the New Zealand Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS).
Ask your supplier (importer/manufacturer) for the required information to show the products they supply meets NZ MEPS. If you sell, lease, hire, or hire purchase products covered by MEPS, you can check your obligations in the legislation.

Label
Seven products have Mandatory Energy Performance Labeling (MEPL) requirements. If you sell, lease, hire, or hire purchase these products, it’s your responsibility to make sure the label is correctly displayed and supplied with each one. There are exemptions for minimal quantities.
Which products require an Energy Rating Label?
- Clothes washers
- Clothes dryers
- Fridge/freezers, fridges, freezers
- Dishwashers
- Televisions
- Computer monitors
- Heat pumps/air conditioners
Displaying products online?
You can choose whether to include Energy Rating Label information – there’s no legal requirement. EECA recommends you display the product’s star rating and annual energy consumption. You can download an energy rating icon to show the product’s star rating, or get a digital version of the full Energy Rating Label from your manufacturer/importer.
The Regulations apply unless your product:
- isn’t covered by the Regulations
- has already been used by a consumer in New Zealand (second-hand products)
- meets conditions under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (note that manufacturers and importers are still required to provide sales data to EECA).
